About us
Oxfordshire Sumo was created by Rob Godfrey at the beginning of 2025. Rob has had a life long passion for martial arts and has experience in many different styles and earned his Shodan, black belt in Shotokan Karate in 2023. During lockdown, he and his family discovered the Grand Sumo tournaments on NHK and it quickly became a family tradition to catch up with the bi-monthly events!
Rob found Aylesbury Sumo Club and began training with them regularly and completed his Level 1 Sumo Coaching qualification.
Rob is a fully qualified and insured coach and is a member of the British Sumo Federation.
Our approach
Sumo is a very unique sport and is just beginning to immerge in the UK. We are inclusive and the beauty of Sumo is that there is no barrier as to who can do it. There is a stigma attached to Sumo that you need to be of a certain height and weight but this is not true. We have various wrestlers within both Sumo organisations that all compete.
